Breakthrough in plasma oxidation technology significantly reduces carbon-fiber production, cost time and energy consumption while offering higher output.
Rising demands for electric vehicles and greater fuel efficiency are pushing automotive manufacturers and suppliers to develop light-weighting options. Carbon fiber offers excellent light-weighting options, but the traditional manufacturing techniques keep the cost high. C. A. Litzler Co., Inc. is offering new plasma-oxidation systems to drastically reduce the cost of carbon fiber. Carbon fiber provides high strength- to-weight ratios, with proven performance and light-weighting success (up to 60-percent weight reduction over steel or aluminum alloys) in many applications, both in and outside the automotive world. The challenge for manufacturers is how to introduce high-volume production of carbon fibers. While becoming more prevalent, carbon fibers currently have a relatively higher cost in relation to steel, aluminum or magnesium in light-weighting vehicles and vehicle components.

The Hidden Mystery Behind Patented Plasma Oxidation Technology Cuts Carbon-fiber Cost
Litzler and RMX Technologies, in a joint project with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, developed a breakthrough in oxidation technology that significantly reduces carbon-fiber production time, cost and energy consumption while offering higher output.
RMX developed a new precursor-to-plasma exposure method—close proximity indirect exposure. This accelerates material processing time by working at the atomic, rather than molecular level of oxygen, to generate highly reactive chemistry directly from the air. Accord-ing to Dr. Truman Bonds, president of RMX, “The oxidation line is where the precursor tows of polyacrylonitride polymers are introduced into oven chambers to be oxidized at a controlled speed and tension. Oxidization of the fiber is required prior to the high- temperature carbonization process. The proprietary plasma-oxidation design provides multiple advantages over conventional technology beyond accelerating the process.”
