Eyes on Fraud: Tips to Fight Online Scam

Would you ever knowingly leave your front door unlocked when going out for the day? They either assume that nothing will happen to them, or they are simply unaware of the risks.

Cybercrime is a constant threat, and just because it doesn’t represent a physical threat in the form of someone trying to break into your home, it can be just as damaging. So, be vigilant when shopping online. Follow these tips:

  • Always ensure the online store is a secured one, look for well-known security labels such as VeriSign and McAfee.
  • The website should have complete contact information, terms of use, and privacy policies.
  • Payment options should include third-party payment services such as Visa, MasterCard, and PayPal.
  • Beware of unbelievable offers. If an offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is. An item being sold at ridiculously low prices, has a high probability of being fake or expired.
  • Keep your personal details personal.  Credit card companies also don’t ask for your password over the Internet or the phone. Unless you want to be the lead character in a ‘based on a true story’ movie about identity theft, steer clear.
