What is CodeLagos Vision

Basically, CodeLagos has a mandate “To Make Lagos the Technology Frontier in Africa”

The world is evolving faster than we can keep up. Around the world, policymakers, social impact organizations, and profit-driven institutions alike are responding to this reality by taking a proactive stance and recording some early gains.

Forward-thinking governments have recognized that in order for their societies to survive, thrive, and remain competitive in a technology-driven world, they must develop a population that can effectively leverage technology in day-to-day living and in the world of work. One specific area of the technology discourse that is gaining ground is the importance of coding as part of education.

Estonia, already known for their early adoption of technology in governance, in 2012 became the first country in the world to institute a scheme to teach children to code. The UK followed suit in 2014, making computer programming a compulsory subject in schools. Other countries in the world, from Finland, to the U.S., to India, have recognized the need to harness the power of technology for the success of their nations and nation-states.

Lagos State has also embraced the approach of using technology as a driving force for development— as seen with the recent selection of Lagos as one of 100 Resilient Cities and the signing of an MOU with Smart City (Dubai). During the signing, His Excellency, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode – the Governor of Lagos State – stated his commitment “to establish a strong convergence between technology, economic development and governance.”

One of the important social functions of education is to facilitate development by providing the quality and quantity of educated human resources required for the prevailing social, economic, and technological conditions. Recognizing the needs of our times, the Lagos State Ministry of Education aims to prepare our population to create and take advantage of the opportunities that will arise as the State’s technological capacity increases.
