Box = computer

Unix = A operating system I will explain later.

lame_box = shell account

To become a real hacker you need to have a unix box. Because, most internet sites run unix, It is important for you to have a unix box as well.

To obtain a unix box:
You can either buy a box set or you can get free versions.

You can get BSD or Linux. BSD is old and hard to use. On the other hand, Linux is easy to use and secure.

I would recommend a Linux box over BSD just because its so much easier to use. You can buy a box set of Linux at Best Buy, Comp USA or something. (There are free versions but you would have to find someone that has Linux and tell the person to burn it for you.) Linux is free to distribute so its not illegal to burn someone a copy. To obtain a free copy of Linux, I would recommend going to a Linux discussion group at a college. Tell them that you are interested in Linux but you don’t have a copy yet and they should give you a copy.

Installation Instructions for Linux: Installing Linux is quite simple and there are plenty of support over the web. Just go to a search engine and search for Linux installation instructions and you should find the information that you need. There is really no point for me to go over how to Install Linux because if you want to become a hacker you should be able to do something that simple, or you can simply follow this link to install Linux https://applygist.com/2017/03/how-to-install-hacker-os-called-kali-on.html

To hack you need to be able to go online. So if you want to hack you need to be able to go online with linux. The problem is that Linux or any other unix operating systems have to have a PPP (point to point protocal) internet connection. Now AOL does not offer a PPP connection. So if you have AOL you cannot hack.

How to you get PPP?

Most if not all broadband or DSL connections are PPP. However on the other hand, most dial-up aren’t. So if you have a broadband connection you are lucky and don’t need to worry about anything. If you have dail-up, and are not sure if you have a PPP connection or not, contact you ISP (Internet Service Provider).

For those of you who do not have a PPP connection, you need to get one or you cannot hack. Look in your phone book for internet service providers and ask them that you are interested in a PPP connection.

After you have a unix-box and a PPP connection,, you should probably pick up a book on Linux, BSD or any other version that you are using. I would recommend a book like (Running Linux by Matt Welsh, Matthias Kalle Dalheimer, and Lar Kaufman) because its more beginner’s oriented. You should be able to pick it up at your local libary or bookstore. If you are using any other versions of unix, I would recommend a book that is part of the O’Reilly Collection. I find them more insightful and great for beginners.
