First of all, what is factory reset? It’s an act that restores your operating system and device settings to the state it was when you bought it. This means once you perform factory reset on any PC or mobile phone, you automatically loose all your files, settings and every other thing you saved there. Another name for resetting is “formatting.”

If that is the case, why on earth will someone even think of performing a factory reset in his or her device?

Well, the answer is not farfetched as there are various reasons why one should reset his or her gadgets, it depends on the issue.

Some of likely issues that will make someone think of resetting or formatting his PC includes malicious Malware / Virus attack, poor performance or you want to sell the device so you want to get rid of all your sensitive information and passwords saved on the device.

We are aware that this process is much easier on mobile phones but in some PC and operating systems, you need to go a bit dipper to perform it.

In some cases, it could be a more complex issue, it turns out that the best solution to any problematic state is performing a full severe thorough factory reset.

NOTE: Factory reset should be your last option in fixing an issue with your PC unless you want to sell the device. This is because, you will loose everything on that PC.

I will advise you to always make a backup of your important files. Also, you should occasionally create recovery files on your PC and save it.

But if all other options fails, then here is how to carry put factory reset on various Windows OS.

Make sure your battery is strong enough and fully charged or simply plug it in a power source when carrying out this process.

How to Factory Reset a Windows 7 or 8 Computer

It isn’t that hard or simple but at least, you can still perform it without being pessimistic. Few computers come with recovery discs, which is a fairly easy way of performing a factory reset – you can just insert the disc and follow the instructions.

 

Also check your app menu because most times windows 8 computers will sometimes have a recovery application which is launched from within Windows.

And if unfortunately, your windows did not arrive with any of the aforementioned processes, then you can follow the procedures below but its advisable to backup your drive first, in order, not to see some heart broken result.

During the startup process, hit the appropriate F key or key combination which we have listed below for your manufacturer.

*Acer – Alt + F10
*Asus – F9
*Dell/Alienware – F8
*HP – F11
*Lenovo – F11
*MSI – F3
*Samsung – F4
*Sony – F10
*Toshiba – 0 (not numpad) while turning on, release key when Toshiba logo appears

Third Step:

You should see instructions on the screen explaining how to proceed. Different manufacturers use different software to restore the ‘disk image’ from the recovery partition.

Some systems restore Windows first, and then install drivers and programs automatically when Windows first boots.

Remember during the second step, If the keys don’t work then look out for a message in the screen during startup which might indicate how to start the recovery process.

 

You might need to check your recovery partition is enabled in the BIOS. It’s also possible your laptop might not have a recovery partition (or it may have been deleted).


How To Factory Reset a Windows 10 Computer or Tablet

  1. Open the Start menu and select Settings (the cog wheel).
  2. Then type ‘reset’ in the search bar
  3. Select ‘Reset this PC’ on the left when the results appear
  4. Under the Recovery section of Update & Security you can now hit ‘Get started’ to begin the process. During this you can select if you would like to keep files or do a full reset.
